Pressure Relief Cushions for Wheelchairs

Our Pressure Relief Wheelchair Cushions are designed to support comfort, posture and skin health for wheelchair users at risk of pressure sores and discomfort.

Sitting for long periods places sustained pressure on the ischial tuberosities (sitting bones) and coccyx - areas especially prone to pressure ulcer development if pressure isn’t evenly distributed.

These cushions are designed to minimise high-pressure points, improve circulation and provide ergonomic support tailored to everyday use in wheelchairs, commodes and chairs.

Options include inflatable and foam designs that accommodate different risk levels, sitting behaviours and user needs, helping to relieve pressure while enhancing stability and posture.

Supporting Comfort, Posture and Skin Health

Wheelchair cushions play a critical role in maintaining comfort, posture and skin health for people who spend extended periods seated in a wheelchair. The right cushion can significantly reduce the risk of pressure ulcers, improve sitting tolerance and support long-term wellbeing, whether used at home, in clinical settings or for everyday mobility.

What Are Wheelchair Cushions?

Wheelchair cushions are specialist seating supports designed to sit on top of a wheelchair seat base. Their primary function is to redistribute pressure away from vulnerable areas such as the buttocks, sacrum and coccyx, where prolonged pressure can restrict blood flow and lead to tissue damage.

In addition to pressure relief, wheelchair cushions also contribute to postural stability, pelvic alignment and overall comfort, making them an essential component of safe and effective wheelchair use.

Why Wheelchair Cushion Choice Matters

Unlike standard seating, wheelchair users often have limited ability to reposition themselves. This increases the risk of sustained pressure on the same areas of skin, particularly over bony prominences. Without adequate pressure redistribution, this can result in pain, numbness and pressure ulcer development.

A well-chosen wheelchair cushion helps to:

  • Reduce peak pressure points
  • Improve circulation to compressed tissues
  • Enhance sitting comfort over longer periods
  • Support posture and pelvic stability
  • Reduce the risk of pressure ulcers and skin breakdown

Types of Wheelchair Cushions

Wheelchair cushions are available in a range of designs to suit different pressure risk levels, mobility needs and usage environments.

Foam Wheelchair Cushions

High-density foam cushions offer basic pressure redistribution and postural support. They are lightweight, cost-effective and suitable for users with lower pressure risk or those who sit for shorter periods. Contoured foam designs can also help with pelvic positioning.

Gel Wheelchair Cushions

Gel cushions provide enhanced pressure relief by moulding to the user’s body shape. They are particularly effective at reducing shear forces and managing heat build-up, making them a good option for users experiencing discomfort or early signs of pressure damage.

Air and Inflatable Wheelchair Cushions

Air cushions use interconnected air cells to allow pressure to be evenly distributed across the seating surface. These cushions are commonly recommended for individuals at medium to high risk of pressure ulcers or those with existing skin breakdown. Correct inflation is essential to ensure effectiveness.

Combination Cushions

Some wheelchair cushions combine foam, gel and air technologies to balance pressure relief, stability and durability. These hybrid designs can be suitable for users who require both high pressure redistribution and improved postural control.

How to Choose the Right Wheelchair Cushion

Choosing the correct wheelchair cushion depends on several key factors:

  • Pressure ulcer risk: Assessed as low, medium or high
  • User mobility: Ability to reposition independently
  • Daily sitting time: Occasional use or prolonged seating
  • Postural needs: Requirement for pelvic or trunk support
  • Wheelchair type: Manual or powered wheelchair dimensions

Healthcare professionals may use recognised tools such as the Waterlow or Braden Scale to guide cushion selection. In higher-risk cases, professional assessment is strongly recommended.

Using Wheelchair Cushions Effectively

Even the most advanced wheelchair cushion should be used as part of a broader pressure care and mobility plan. Regular repositioning, routine skin checks, good nutrition and hydration all support pressure ulcer prevention.

Cushions should be correctly sized for the wheelchair, securely positioned, and regularly checked for wear, compression or air loss. Covers should be breathable, removable and easy to clean to maintain hygiene and comfort.

Who Can Benefit from Wheelchair Cushions?

Wheelchair cushions are suitable for a wide range of users, including:

  • Full-time and part-time wheelchair users
  • Individuals with reduced mobility or neurological conditions
  • Older adults at risk of pressure sores
  • People recovering from surgery or injury
  • Those managing existing pressure ulcers

How Levabo Relieves Heel Pressure in Bed

Pressure ulcers, also known as pressure sores, are a significant concern in hospitals and care homes, particularly among immobile or vulnerable patients. The heel is especially prone to ulceration due to its minimal soft tissue padding and frequent contact with bed surfaces. Heel Up pressure relief cushions offer a targeted solution by completely offloading the heel, redistributing pressure, and protecting the skin from injury.
