How Heel Lifts can Help You

Orthotic heel lifts or shoe lifts are required by a surprisingly large percentage of people at some time in our lives, for reasons ranging from runners gait correction or golf swing improvement, to Achilles' tendonitis or other conditions such as lower back pain, or for physical therapy and post-stroke or post-surgical rehabilitation needs.

Two different types of heel inserts are used for a variety of medical conditions, including leg length discrepancy, lower back pain, Achilles tendon problems, heel spurs, arthritic inflammation, and gait correction. The heel lift and the heel cusion. Heel lifts and heel cushions are not the same thing. Firm heel lifts or shoe lifts are used as therapy or support for various reasons:

  • Leg Length Discrepancy
  • Postural imbalance
  • Lower back pain or spinal scoliosis
  • Achilles tendon condition
  • Rehabilitation needs
  • Adjustable heel lifts allow you to change the height of the lift by removing and replacing layers of flexible material.

Achilles Tendon Injuries

Heel raises or lifts aid Achilles tendon injuries by lessening tension on the tendon, altering biomechanics, and offering pain relief. They reduce dorsiflexion demands, thus easing strain during activities like walking or running. By modifying foot and ankle biomechanics, they redistribute forces away from the Achilles tendon, especially useful for cases of excessive pronation. Heel lifts also alleviate pain by minimizing tendon stretch. Additionally, they facilitate gradual progression back to activity, supporting rehabilitation efforts and preventing further injury. However, their use should be part of a comprehensive treatment plan under professional guidance.

Achilles Tendinitis

Lifts aid plantar fasciitis by reducing tension on the plantar fascia, improving foot biomechanics, and cushioning the heel for shock absorption. They lessen stretch requirements on the fascia during activities and redistribute pressure away from the affected area. Additionally,  lifts can gradually stretch the plantar fascia and provide support during recovery. While helpful, they are typically part of a comprehensive treatment plan that may include stretching exercises, orthotics, and professional guidance.

Leg Length Discrepancy

Heel lifts effectively manage leg length discrepancy (LLD) by equalising leg lengths, improving alignment, and reducing strain on muscles and joints. They correct gait abnormalities, pelvic tilt, and biomechanical imbalances, reducing the risk of overuse injuries. Heel lifts enhance comfort, function, and mobility by promoting symmetrical weight distribution between legs during activities. Customizable to individual needs, they are part of a comprehensive treatment plan coordinated with healthcare professionals.

Back Pain

These lifts alleviate back pain by correcting alignment issues caused by leg length discrepancies, reducing strain on muscles and promoting spinal alignment. They equalize leg lengths, distributing weight evenly and improving biomechanics during activities. By providing cushioning and shock absorption, heel lifts lessen the impact of weight-bearing activities on the spine. Customizable to individual needs, they should be part of a comprehensive treatment plan guided by healthcare professionals, addressing underlying causes of back pain and incorporating exercise and postural correction techniques.
