Each day, about 15 people in the UK are diagnosed with sarcoma – roughly 5,300 per year. Sarcomas are rare cancers of bone or soft tissue, and treatment often involves major surgery. Whenever possible, surgeons perform limb-sparing operations (also called limb salvage surgery) to remove the tumor without amputating the limb. In some cases, however, amputation becomes necessary (for example, if a tumour cannot be completely removed or if cancer returns).

With an ageing population, decline in student podiatrists, and tightening healthcare budgets across the UK, the podiatry sector is facing significant barriers as an allied health service.
There are currently between 10,000 and 14,500 registered podiatrists across the UK, a number that – according to Statista – has fallen dramatically since the previous year. This is of particular concern when you consider the ageing population along with the prevalence of conditions that have specific impact on lower limb care.

Diabetes is one of the most common diseases amongst adults in the UK, affecting roughly 4.3 million people and responsible for 174 amputations every week. Diabetic foot ulcers occur in between 10% and15% of people living with diabetes and, if left unmanaged, can lead to serious complications for the individual.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy has now been classed as an unlicensed human medicine by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), prompting the Royal College of Podiatry and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) to urge their members to cease its use with immediate effect.
