Chiropody Felt

Podiatry or chiropody felts and padding materials are used for a range of podiatric and orthotic therapies and can be customised to meet the needs of the patient.

These specialist materials are designed to distribute pressure across parts of the foot to prevent the formation of ailments such as corns and blisters, reducing pain and discomfort to the patient.

The felts are also used for Diabetic Foot offloading where ulcers have either formed or are at risk of forming. Algeos stock several types in different thicknesses and sizes.

Chiropody Felt

Guide: How to Use Felts for Foot Care

Chiropody or podiatry felt is a useful material. It helps reduce pressure and discomfort from calluses, corns, blisters or friction. In some cases, it can also help with ulcers. This felt cushions the foot and spreads out pressure. This helps protect sensitive areas, relieve pain and promote healing.

What is it?

Chiropody felt, also called adhesive felt or Podiatry Felt, is usually made from wool or synthetic fibres. It has a self-adhesive backing. It is available in various thicknesses, usually ranging from 3mm to 10mm, allowing for customisation based on individual needs.

The material is cut into certain shapes. It is then placed directly on the skin. This helps cushion the foot and lessen pressure on sore areas.

Common Uses

This felt is commonly used to address the following foot issues:

  • Calluses: Relieves pressure and prevents further irritation around calluses.
  • Corns: Offloads pressure from corns providing immediate relief.
  • Ulcers: Protects ulcerated areas, preventing further injury and promoting healing.
  • Metatarsalgia: Used to create custom insoles or padding to redistribute pressure away from painful pressure points.
  • Post-surgical Care: Protects sensitive foot areas during recovery after foot surgery.

How to Apply the Felts

  1. Clean and Dry the foot: Ensure the skin is clean and dry before application.
  2. Cut to Shape: Use scissors to cut the felt into the desired shape.
  3. Test the Fit: Place the felt against the foot to check the fit before removing the backing.
  4. Apply the Felt: Remove the adhesive backing and carefully apply the felt to the foot.
  5. Check for Comfort: Walk around to ensure comfort and proper placement.
  6. Replace as Needed: Replace the felt when it starts to lose its cushioning effect.

Tips for Effective Use

  • Layering: Layer multiple pieces for additional cushioning, but avoid excessive thickness.
  • Insole Additions: Use felt to create custom insole mods for more complex conditions like metatarsalgia.

Advantages of Felt Use

  • Immediate Relief: Provides immediate pain relief by offloading pressure from sensitive areas.
  • Customisable: Easily cut and shaped to meet individual needs.
  • Non-Invasive: Offers a non-invasive way to manage foot pain.
  • Cost-Effective: An affordable solution compared to custom devices, pain relief or other devices.

Chiropody felt is a simple yet effective tool in foot care, offering relief from common foot issues. It cushions the foot, redistributes pressure and protects sensitive areas - promoting healing and improving comfort.

This felt can be a useful part of at-home foot care with professional guidance.
