Product Description

Durable Stretch PVC Orthotic Covering

Techno Vinyl Stretch is a 1mm PVC two-way stretch top covering designed to enhance the appearance, comfort and durability of foot orthoses in clinical and fabrication environments.

Best for: TCI’s, FFO’s, simple insoles and orthotic devices requiring a durable, stretchable cosmetic top cover.

Not ideal for: Ultra-minimal devices where additional thickness must be kept below 1mm or applications requiring high breathability fabric covers.

  • Two-way stretch for smooth contouring into heel cups
  • Good abrasion resistance for extended device life
  • Bonds easily to EVA, PPH and Poron urethanes

What is it?

Techno Vinyl Stretch is a flexible PVC orthotic top covering material developed for use as a protective barrier between the patient’s foot and the orthotic device. At 1mm thick, it provides full coverage while maintaining a low-profile finish suitable for most standard orthotic designs.

The material features two-way stretch properties, allowing it to conform neatly into heel cups and across contoured surfaces without excessive wrinkling. This makes it particularly suitable for total contact insoles (TCIs), functional foot orthoses (FFOs) and simple insole constructions.

In addition to its cosmetic appeal, Techno Vinyl Stretch is designed to improve durability. Its abrasion-resistant surface can help reduce early wear in high-friction areas such as the heel and forefoot.

Who is it for?

Techno Vinyl Stretch is intended for professional orthotic fabrication environments as well as specialist workshops that require reliable, easy-to-work top cover materials.

  • Orthotists and prosthetists
  • Orthotic technicians and fabrication labs
  • NHS and hospital in-house workshops
  • Private podiatry clinics manufacturing or modifying devices
  • Sports podiatrists and MSK clinics
  • Footwear and insole product developers
  • Universities and training institutions
  • Bespoke footwear makers and specialist repairers
  • Advanced DIY users with appropriate knowledge

It is particularly suited to environments where appearance, hygiene and durability are equally important considerations.

What is it used for?

Techno Vinyl Stretch is primarily used as a top cover material in orthotic and insole manufacture. It provides a neat, professional finish while helping protect the underlying shell or cushioning layers.

Applications

  • Top covering for total contact insoles (TCIs)
  • Covering for functional foot orthoses (FFOs)
  • Simple insole fabrication
  • Refurbishment of existing orthotics
  • Heel cup lining
  • Protective layer over EVA, PPH and Poron urethanes

Characteristics

  • Two-way stretch for controlled shaping
  • 1mm thickness for full coverage with modest profile
  • Durable PVC construction
  • Resistant to abrasion
  • Washable surface
  • Available in multiple modern colours
  • Supplied in 1430mm width rolls
  • Sold per metre for flexible ordering

Typical Users

Most commonly used by orthotic labs and clinics producing medium- to high-volume devices, Techno Vinyl Stretch supports consistent finishing standards across different orthotic types. It is also suitable for prototype development where colour choice and presentation are important.

How to work with it

The material bonds easily to common orthotic base materials including EVA, PPH and Poron urethanes. Its stretch characteristics allow it to be drawn smoothly into heel cups and across contoured devices with appropriate adhesive application.

It can be cut using standard workshop tools and trimmed flush once bonded. The washable surface supports routine cleaning during fitting and after patient dispensing.

Expected Use Timeline

First use

Once bonded and fully cured (according to the adhesive manufacturer’s guidance), the device can be dispensed as normal. The 1mm PVC layer provides immediate surface protection and a smooth interface against hosiery or bare skin.

Ongoing use

Over weeks and months of wear, the abrasion-resistant surface is designed to withstand regular foot movement and shoe friction. As with all top covers, longevity depends on patient activity level, footwear choice and maintenance. Periodic review during orthotic check-ups is recommended.

Common Problems and How It Helps

Common problem How the product helps
Top covers wearing through quickly at heel or forefoot Abrasion-resistant PVC surface can reduce early surface wear in high-friction zones.
Wrinkling in deep heel cups during bonding Two-way stretch allows smoother contouring into curved shapes.
Orthotics looking unfinished or inconsistent Provides a clean, uniform cosmetic finish in a choice of modern colours.
Difficulty bonding to common base materials Compatible with EVA, PPH and Poron urethanes using appropriate adhesives.
Surface difficult to clean after fitting Washable PVC layer supports routine cleaning and hygiene maintenance.

Key Benefits

  • Two-way stretch supports accurate shaping into heel cups and contoured devices.
  • 1mm thickness balances durability with a relatively low profile.
  • Good abrasion resistance for longer-lasting surface performance.
  • Washable and easy to maintain in clinical and patient settings.
  • Wide 1430mm roll width suitable for efficient workshop cutting.
  • Available in Blue, Black, Cobalto, Lime and Silver for varied aesthetic preferences.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Expecting the top cover alone to compensate for poor shell design or structural weakness.
  • Applying adhesive unevenly, which may cause bubbling or lifting.
  • Overstretching during bonding, leading to surface tension or premature lifting.
  • Using in applications requiring high breathability without considering ventilation needs.

How to Work With Techno Vinyl Stretch

  1. Cut the required size from the 1430mm wide roll, allowing slight excess for trimming.
  2. Prepare the orthotic base by ensuring the surface is clean, dry and dust-free.
  3. Apply a suitable adhesive to both the orthotic base and the underside of the vinyl, following adhesive manufacturer guidance.
  4. Allow adhesive to reach the appropriate tack stage before bonding.
  5. Position from heel to forefoot, smoothing progressively to minimise air entrapment.
  6. Gently stretch into heel cups and contours without excessive force.
  7. Apply firm, even pressure across the surface.
  8. Trim excess material neatly once bonding is secure.

Always follow standard workshop safety procedures and adhesive handling guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Techno Vinyl Stretch suitable for deep heel cups?

Yes. The two-way stretch properties are designed to help the material conform into heel cups and moderate contours when applied correctly.

Can it be used on both rigid and semi-rigid orthotics?

It can be applied over a range of base materials including EVA, PPH and Poron urethanes, provided an appropriate adhesive system is used.

How durable is the surface?

The PVC layer offers good abrasion resistance. Actual lifespan depends on patient activity levels, footwear and maintenance.

Is it breathable?

As a PVC material, breathability is limited compared to fabric covers. Consider patient needs and footwear environment when selecting a top cover.

Can the surface be cleaned?

Yes. The washable surface allows routine cleaning with appropriate mild cleaning methods.

Is it supplied pre-cut?

No. It is supplied in a 1430mm wide roll and sold per metre, allowing you to cut to your required dimensions.
