Hallux Valgus Splints

Hallux valgus, also known as a bunion, can cause foot pain, swelling and make it hard to find comfortable shoes. Our hallux valgus splints are designed to gently straighten the big toe, ease pressure on the joint and reduce discomfort. They may also help slow down the worsening of the bunion.

The splints are a simple, non-surgical way to manage bunions. They can be used on their own or alongside other care such as supportive insoles and well-fitting footwear.

Whether you’re looking for gentle relief or extra support, our range has an option to suit your needs.

Hallux Valgus Splint

How They Work

How do the Splints Work?

The HV splint works by gently repositioning the big toe to reduce pressure on the joint. Over time, consistent use can slow the progression of the condition and provide relief from symptoms.

Some splints offer dynamic support, meaning they allow for limited movement, while others are more rigid for nighttime use.

Key Benefits for the Splints

1. Pain Reduction

One of the primary reasons people use splints is to alleviate pain. By redistributing pressure across the foot - the splints can reduce inflammation and prevent excessive strain on the affected joint. This makes it easier to walk and wear shoes comfortably.

2. Improved Toe Alignment

The splints gradually encourage a more natural toe position. While they may not completely reverse the condition - especially in severe cases, they can help slow further misalignment and improve overall foot posture.

3. Non-Surgical Alternative

Surgery is often considered for advanced cases, but many people prefer to explore conservative treatments first. A splint provides a practical option for those who want to manage their condition without undergoing an invasive procedure.

4. Prevent Further Deterioration

Using a splint as soon as symptoms appear can help prevent worsening of the deformity. By keeping the toe in a more anatomically correct position, these supports can delay the need for more aggressive interventions.

5. Night and Day Options

There are two main types of bunion splints:

Nighttime braces: Designed for extended wear while sleeping, these are typically more rigid to hold the toe in place.

Daytime correctors: These are often more flexible and can be worn inside shoes for ongoing support.

Who Should Use a Hallux Valgus Splints?

They are suitable for individuals experiencing discomfort or visible changes in the big toe’s alignment. It is particularly useful for:

  • People with early-stage hallux valgus who want to prevent progression.
  • Those seeking pain relief without medication.
  • Individuals recovering from bunion surgery who need extra support.
  • Anyone looking for a simple solution to improve foot alignment.

If symptoms are severe - a consultation with a podiatrist is recommended to determine the best course of action.

Choosing the Right Splint for Your Needs

When selecting a toe alignment device, consider the following:

  • Material & Comfort: Soft, cushioned designs are best for daytime use, while firmer structures offer more correction at night.
  • Adjustability: Some options have Velcro straps or hinges to customise the fit.
  • Compatibility with Shoes: If wearing it during the day, ensure it fits comfortably inside footwear.
  • Severity of the Condition: More advanced misalignment may require a more rigid support.

While a hallux valgus foot brace is an effective aid, combining it with other methods can further improve foot health. Consider:

  • Wearing wider shoes to reduce pressure on the bunion.
  • Using insoles to provide additional arch support.
  • Stretching exercises to maintain flexibility in the foot muscles.
  • Applying cold therapy to reduce swelling after long periods of standing.

These small adjustments can enhance the effectiveness of the splint and contribute to long-term comfort.

The hallux valgus splint offers a practical, non-invasive way to manage bunions and slow the progression of hallux valgus.

By providing toe realignment, reducing pain, and preventing further deterioration, they serve as an excellent alternative to surgery. Whether used overnight or during daily activities, these devices offer relief and improve overall foot function.
