FAQ - Surface Cleaning

1. When cleaning a work surface, what should you do first?

The first step in cleaning any work surface is to clear the area of any items. This includes moving tools, equipment, or any clutter that might be on the surface. By doing this, you ensure that the entire area is accessible and can be thoroughly cleaned. Removing items also prevents any potential damage or contamination of objects during the cleaning process.

2. What kind of cleaning solution should I use for different types of surfaces in healthcare and salons?

Using professional surface cleaners ensures effective and safe cleaning across various surfaces:

  • Healthcare settings:
    • Stainless steel: Use a professional-grade disinfectant cleaner specifically formulated for medical environments. These cleaners are designed to be effective against a broad spectrum of pathogens.
    • Plastic and vinyl: Opt for professional disinfectant sprays or wipes suitable for non-porous surfaces. Ensure the product is compatible with the material to avoid damage.
  • Salon settings:
    • Wooden surfaces: Use a mild professional detergent designed for wood. Avoid excessive water and harsh chemicals that can damage the wood.
    • Glass and mirrors: Professional glass cleaners or a mixture of water and vinegar work well to remove smudges and streaks.
    • Styling chairs and equipment: Use disinfectant wipes that are safe for use on leather or vinyl, ensuring they meet industry hygiene standards.

3. How often should work surfaces be cleaned in healthcare and salons?

The frequency of cleaning is crucial in maintaining hygiene standards:

  • Healthcare settings:
    • Clean surfaces multiple times a day, especially in high-touch areas like patient rooms, examination tables, and medical equipment.
    • Disinfect surfaces after each patient interaction.
  • Salon settings:
    • Clean and disinfect styling stations and equipment after each client.
    • Wipe down waiting areas and frequently touched surfaces several times a day.

4. Can I use bleach on my work surfaces?

Bleach can be effective for disinfecting but it’s not suitable for all surfaces. It can damage wood, corrode metal, and discolour some materials. If you choose to use bleach:

  • Healthcare settings:
    • Use diluted bleach solutions (one part bleach to ten parts water) for disinfecting non-porous surfaces.
    • Rinse the surface thoroughly with water after using bleach.
    • Always wear gloves and ensure good ventilation.
  • Salon settings:
    • Use with caution and ensure proper dilution. Rinse thoroughly to prevent damage and odour.

5. What are some natural alternatives to commercial cleaning products?

There are several natural alternatives that are effective and eco-friendly:

  • Vinegar: Great for cutting grease and removing odours. Mix with water for a versatile cleaner.
  • Baking soda: Acts as a mild abrasive for scrubbing surfaces without scratching.
  • Lemon juice: Effective against bacteria and adds a fresh scent.
  • Essential oils: Tea tree oil has natural antiseptic properties, while lavender and eucalyptus can provide pleasant fragrances.

6. How do I prevent cross-contamination when cleaning?

Preventing cross-contamination is crucial, especially in healthcare and salon environments:

  • Healthcare settings:
    • Use separate cloths or disposable wipes for different areas (e.g., one for patient rooms, another for common areas).
    • Clean cloths and sponges regularly: Wash them in hot water or microwave wet sponges for two minutes to kill bacteria.
    • Disinfect frequently touched surfaces: Pay special attention to handles, knobs, and switches.
  • Salon settings:
    • Use separate tools for each client and disinfect them between uses.
    • Clean and disinfect surfaces after each client to maintain hygiene standards.

7. What is the best way to clean electronic equipment on work surfaces?

Electronic equipment requires special care:

  • Turn off and unplug devices before cleaning.
  • Use a dry, soft cloth for dusting. Microfibre cloths are ideal as they trap dust without scratching.
  • For smudges and fingerprints: Dampen a cloth with a mixture of water and isopropyl alcohol. Wipe gently and avoid excessive moisture.
  • Healthcare settings: Disinfect devices with alcohol-based wipes suitable for electronic equipment.
  • Salon settings: Use appropriate disinfectant wipes for electronic equipment and avoid excessive moisture.

8. How can I maintain the cleanliness of my work surfaces?

Maintaining cleanliness involves consistent practices:

  • Healthcare settings:
    • Wipe down surfaces regularly: Don’t wait for visible dirt; regular cleaning prevents buildup.
    • Use coasters and placemats: This reduces the risk of spills and stains.
    • Organise your workspace: Keep clutter to a minimum, making cleaning easier and more effective.
    • Schedule deep cleaning: Periodically deep clean surfaces to maintain their condition and hygiene.
  • Salon settings:
    • Ensure regular cleaning of all workstations and client areas.
    • Implement a cleaning schedule for deep cleaning tasks.
    • Use protective covers for surfaces that are prone to spills or staining.

9. Are there any special considerations for cleaning surfaces in healthcare settings?

Healthcare settings have strict cleaning protocols to prevent infections:

  • Follow hospital-grade cleaning guidelines: Use EPA-registered disinfectants effective against a broad spectrum of pathogens.
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces multiple times a day.
  • Use disposable cleaning wipes to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Ensure proper ventilation during and after cleaning to reduce the concentration of airborne contaminants.

10. What are some common mistakes to avoid when cleaning work surfaces?

Avoid these pitfalls to ensure effective and safe cleaning:

  • Using the wrong cleaner: This can damage surfaces or leave residues that attract more dirt.
  • Overlooking small areas: Pay attention to corners, edges, and crevices where dirt can accumulate.
  • Not allowing disinfectants to sit: For them to be effective, they need contact time. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Using dirty cleaning tools: Clean cloths, sponges, and brushes frequently to avoid spreading germs.

By following these guidelines and utilising professional surface cleaners, you can keep your work surfaces clean, safe, and in good condition. Whether in a healthcare setting or a salon, proper cleaning practices contribute significantly to a hygienic and pleasant environment.
