How and When to Use EAB Tapes

Elastic Adhesive Bandage, often shortened to EAB tape, is a staple item in sports medicine, physiotherapy, and first aid kits. If you’ve ever watched a rugby match or football game, you’ll probably have seen players with thick white or tan strapping around their ankles, knees, or wrists – that’s usually EAB. 

But what exactly is it, how do you use it, and when is it the right choice?

What is Elastic Adhesive Bandage?

EAB is a stretchy, sticky bandage designed to provide firm support and compression while still allowing some movement. Unlike rigid zinc oxide tape, which locks joints in place, EAB has elasticity, meaning it can mould to the body and adjust with movement. 

It’s made with a fabric base and a strong adhesive, usually hand-tearable so it can be applied quickly without scissors – ideal for pitch-side or clinic use.

When to Use EAB

  • Joint Support: Wrap ankles, knees, wrists or thumbs for added stability during sport.
  • Injury Management: Apply for compression after sprains or to secure ice packs and padding.
  • Protective Strapping: Use over vulnerable areas (e.g. bruised thigh) with padding to absorb impact.
  • Holding Dressings: The strong adhesive makes it reliable for keeping dressings in place.

How to Use EAB

  1. Prepare the skin – apply underwrap if needed or ensure the skin is clean and dry.
  2. Position the joint – place in a stable but functional position.
  3. Apply with overlap – wrap with 50% overlap and 50% stretch for balanced support.
  4. Secure the end – tear by hand and smooth down the adhesive edge.
  5. Check circulation – fingers and toes should stay pink and warm, not cold or blue.

Best for support with flexibility (e.g. ankles, knees). Best for immobilising joints or protecting sprains.
Hand-tearable, breathable fabric. Requires scissors, less flexible.
