Blister Plasters and Padding

Foot blisters are small, fluid-filled pockets that develop on the skin due to friction, pressure, or irritation, commonly resulting from ill-fitting footwear or prolonged activity.

Our blister prevention range includes hydrocolloid blister plasters, designed to create optimal healing conditions for foot blisters by providing cushioning and protection against friction. For proactive care, PelliTec Blister Pads adhere to footwear rather than skin, effectively reducing friction and preventing blister formation. Additionally, the Silipos Blister Prevention Stick offers an invisible barrier that glides on smoothly, safeguarding feet from irritation caused by new or open-toe shoes.

Bilster Plasters - Preventing and Caring for Blisters

Blisters are small pockets of fluid that form on the skin, typically as a result of friction, burns or other forms of irritation. While they serve as a protective barrier to underlying tissues, blisters can be uncomfortable and, if not properly managed, may lead to complications.

Understanding how to prevent and care for blisters is essential for maintaining healthy skin, especially for individuals who are physically active or frequently on their feet.

Preventing Blisters

Prevention is the most effective strategy when it comes to blisters. Here are several methods to reduce the risk:

  • Wear Properly Fitting Footwear: Ill-fitting shoes are a common cause of blisters. Ensure your shoes are neither too tight nor too loose - providing adequate space for your feet without excessive movement. Breaking in new shoes gradually can also help prevent friction-related blisters.
  • Choose Appropriate Socks: Opt for moisture-wicking socks made from synthetic materials or merino wool to keep feet dry and reduce friction. Avoid cotton socks, as they retain moisture - increasing the likelihood of blisters.
  • Use Protective Barriers: Applying blister plasters, gel protectors or moleskin to areas prone to friction can provide cushioning and reduce the risk of blister formation. These products act as a second skin - shielding vulnerable areas.
  • Keep Skin Dry: Moisture can exacerbate friction. Using foot powders or antiperspirants can help keep feet dry, especially during extended periods of activity.
  • Apply Lubricants: Products like petroleum jelly or anti-chafing balms can reduce friction on areas susceptible to blisters, such as the feet and inner thighs.
  • Wear Gloves: When engaging in activities that involve repetitive hand movements, such as rowing or using tools, wearing gloves can protect the skin from friction-induced blisters.

Caring for Blisters

Despite preventive measures, blisters can still occur. Proper care is crucial to promote healing and prevent infection:

  • Do Not Pop the Blister: Intact blisters protect the underlying skin. Avoid popping them unless they are large, painful, or likely to burst on their own.
  • Keep the Area Clean: Gently wash the blister and surrounding area with mild soap and water. Pat dry with a clean towel.
  • Protect the Blister: Cover the blister with a sterile, non-stick bandage or blister plaster to cushion the area and prevent further friction. Ensure the dressing is changed daily or if it becomes wet or dirty.
  • Monitor for Infection: Signs of infection include increased redness, warmth, swelling, pus or red streaks leading away from the blister. If these symptoms occur, seek medical attention promptly.
  • Drain Large or Painful Blisters Carefully: If necessary, sterilise a needle with rubbing alcohol, puncture the edge of the blister and gently press out the fluid. Do not remove the overlying skin, as it protects the healing area. Apply an antibiotic ointment and cover with a sterile bandage.

Blisters - Frequently Asked Questions

What causes blisters?

Blisters commonly result from friction, burns or skin reactions. Friction blisters occur due to repetitive rubbing - often from ill-fitting shoes or manual work. Burns, including sunburn, can also lead to blister formation. Additionally, certain medical conditions and skin reactions may cause blisters.

Should I pop a blister?

It's generally advisable not to pop a blister, as the intact skin serves as a protective barrier against infection. However, if a blister is large, painful or likely to burst on its own, it can be carefully drained using sterile techniques.

How can I prevent blisters during physical activity?

To prevent blisters during activities like running or hiking, wear moisture-wicking socks, ensure your footwear fits properly, and consider using blister plasters or lubricants on areas prone to friction. Gradually increasing the intensity and duration of activities can also help your skin adapt and reduce the risk of blisters.

What are the signs of an infected blister?

Signs of infection include increased redness, warmth, swelling, pus or red streaks extending from the blister. If you notice any of these symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.

Can I use over-the-counter products to treat blisters?

Yes, over-the-counter products like blister plasters, antibiotic ointments and protective dressings can aid in blister care. These products help cushion the area, prevent infection, and promote healing.

How long does it take for a blister to heal?

Most blisters heal naturally within 3 to 7 days. Keeping the area clean, protected, and avoiding further friction will support the healing process.
