Elastic Adhesive Bandage (EAB)

Club EAB tape refers to a type of Elastic Adhesive Bandage (EAB) that’s widely used in sports medicine, physiotherapy and pitch-side first aid.

The 'Club' part usually just means it’s supplied in bulk, affordable rolls designed for team and club use rather than specialist clinical packs. Gneral features include:

  • Elastic adhesive bandage - a stretchy tape with a strong adhesive backing.
  • Designed to give firm support and compression while still allowing some movement.

What it’s used for:

  • Strapping joints (ankles, wrists, knees) to prevent or manage injury.
  • Compression for swelling after knocks or sprains.
  • Commonly used in rugby, football, hockey, and other contact sports where quick, reliable support is needed.

EAB Tape

How and When to Use EAB Tapes

Elastic Adhesive Bandage, often shortened to EAB tape, is a staple item in sports medicine, physiotherapy, and first aid kits. If you’ve ever watched a rugby match or football game, you’ll probably have seen players with thick white or tan strapping around their ankles, knees, or wrists – that’s usually EAB.

But what exactly is it, how do you use it, and when is it the right choice?

What is Elastic Adhesive Bandage?

EAB is a stretchy, sticky bandage designed to provide firm support and compression while still allowing some movement. Unlike rigid zinc oxide tape, which locks joints in place, EAB has elasticity, meaning it can mould to the body and adjust with movement.

It’s made with a fabric base and a strong adhesive, usually hand-tearable so it can be applied quickly without scissors – ideal for pitch-side or clinic use.

When to Use EAB

  • Joint Support: Wrap ankles, knees, wrists or thumbs for added stability during sport.
  • Injury Management: Apply for compression after sprains or to secure ice packs and padding.
  • Protective Strapping: Use over vulnerable areas (e.g. bruised thigh) with padding to absorb impact.
  • Holding Dressings: The strong adhesive makes it reliable for keeping dressings in place.

How to Use EAB

  1. Prepare the skin – apply underwrap if needed or ensure the skin is clean and dry.
  2. Position the joint – place in a stable but functional position.
  3. Apply with overlap – wrap with 50% overlap and 50% stretch for balanced support.
  4. Secure the end – tear by hand and smooth down the adhesive edge.
  5. Check circulation – fingers and toes should stay pink and warm, not cold or blue.

Advantages of EAB

  • Quick to apply and hand-tearable.
  • Strong adhesive keeps it secure during activity.
  • Provides both compression and support.
  • Breathable fabric allows comfort.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Not suitable for immobilising severe injuries – seek medical advice if needed.
  • Adhesive may irritate sensitive skin.
  • Replace once it loses elasticity or becomes loose.
  • Use as part of a wider rehab or injury management plan.

EAB vs Zinc Oxide Tape

Elastic Adhesive Bandage (EAB) Zinc Oxide Tape
Elastic, allows some movement. Rigid, restricts movement completely.
Best for support with flexibility (e.g. ankles, knees). Best for immobilising joints or protecting sprains.
Hand-tearable, breathable fabric. Requires scissors, less flexible.
Comfortable for longer wear during play. Stronger restriction, but less comfortable over time.

Elastic Adhesive Bandage is a simple but highly effective tool for supporting joints, managing swelling, and protecting players on and off the field. Its balance of strength and flexibility makes it a go-to choice for physiotherapists, sports medics, and athletes alike.

Use EAB when you need firm, reliable support that won’t completely restrict movement – perfect for joints under stress or injuries needing compression and protection.
