Guide: How to Choose the Best Products for Fungal Toenail Treatment

Fungal toenail infections – or onychomycosis – are more common than many realise. Whether you're a podiatrist treating recurring cases in clinic or someone spotting early signs at home, tackling a fungal nail infection early with the right products is key to restoring clear, healthy nails.

But with so many treatment options available, how do you choose the one that actually works? In this guide, we'll explain what causes fungal nails, what to look for in an effective treatment and which products are most trusted by UK healthcare professionals and patients alike.

What Is a Fungal Toenail Infection?

A fungal nail infection occurs when fungi (usually dermatophytes, but sometimes yeasts or moulds) get under or into the nail. They feed on keratin – the protein that makes up the nail – which leads to discolouration, thickening, brittleness and often a crumbly texture.

Left untreated, infections can spread to other nails or even the skin around the nail bed, making treatment more difficult.

Key Signs of Fungal Toenails

  • Yellow, brown or white discolouration of the nail
  • Thickened, brittle or crumbly nail texture
  • Distorted nail shape
  • Build-up of debris under the nail
  • Separation of the nail from the nail bed
  • Odour or discomfort (especially if left untreated)

What to Look for in Fungal Toenail Treatments

Not all fungal nail treatments are created equal. Some focus on killing the fungus, while others aim to protect, nourish and restore the nail at the same time. Here's what to consider when choosing a product:

1. Active Antifungal Ingredients

Look for treatments containing proven antifungal agents. Tea tree oil is a popular natural option, while medical-grade formulas often include ingredients like clotrimazole, urea or biotin, which can help soften, hydrate and support the nail as it regrows.

2. Ease of Application

Products that are simple to apply – such as pens, varnishes or sprays – tend to have better compliance, especially for long-term use. Many infections take months to fully clear, so convenience matters.

3. Penetration Ability

Since the fungus often lives beneath the nail, a treatment needs to penetrate deeply to reach the source of infection. Look for formulas specifically developed to absorb into the nail plate.

4. Nail Strengthening and Repair

Ingredients such as silicon and biotin not only help with treatment but also restore nail condition, reducing the chance of reinfection.

5. Professional Recommendation

Treatments used or recommended by podiatrists and chiropodists are more likely to have undergone clinical testing and real-world evaluation. Choosing trusted brands can offer peace of mind.

Top Products from Algeos for Treating Fungal Toenails

At Algeos, we stock a curated range of fungal nail treatments trusted by UK podiatrists and used in clinics nationwide. Here are some standout options:

Poderm Nail Varnishes

These Swiss-made formulas are enriched with tea tree oil, silicon and biotin – a triple action that treats, strengthens and nourishes.

Available in clear and tinted versions, they camouflage discolouration while working against fungus underneath. Ideal for everyday wear and discreet treatment.

Poderm Purifiant Antifungal Treatment

This is a medical-grade treatment targeted specifically at active fungal infections. It combines antifungal agents with plant-based actives to restore balance and protect nail health.

It’s particularly useful in cases of yellowed or thickened nails that have become unsightly or uncomfortable.

Tea Tree Oil-Based Creams and Sprays

Tea tree oil is well known for its antifungal and antiseptic properties. Used as part of a daily foot care routine, these products can help prevent infection or support ongoing treatment. Look for high-quality, properly formulated versions for best results.

Urea-Based Nail Softeners

Urea helps soften thickened, hard nails so that active ingredients can reach deeper. These are ideal when used in conjunction with antifungal treatments or before debridement in clinic settings.

Tips for Managing Fungal Nail Infections

Alongside using the right products, there are practical steps you can take to improve treatment outcomes:

  • Keep feet clean and dry: Fungi thrive in damp conditions. Always dry between toes after washing.
  • Wear breathable footwear: Choose shoes made from natural materials and avoid tight styles.
  • Change socks daily: Opt for moisture-wicking socks, especially if you're on your feet all day.
  • Disinfect shoes: Use antifungal sprays inside shoes and replace old footwear where needed.
  • Avoid nail trauma: Protect nails from injury and avoid cutting them too short or unevenly.

When to Seek Professional Advice

If the infection is severe, spreading or not improving with over-the-counter products, it’s best to consult a podiatrist or GP. In some cases, oral antifungal medication or nail debridement may be needed alongside topical treatments.

Choose Proven Solutions

Treating fungal toenails takes time, patience and consistency. Choosing the best product means looking for evidence-based ingredients, ease of use and supportive formulations that care for the nail during recovery.
