Clinical Efficiency

Clinical practice guidelines recommend regular repositioning of at least two hours for patients with reduced mobility. Repositioning the body reduces prolonged pressure on vulnerable areas, significantly reducing the risk of further skin breakdown. (NICE Guidelines: National Clinical Guideline Centre (UK). The Prevention and Management of Pressure Ulcers in Primary and Secondary Care. London: National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE); 2014 Apr. (NICE Clinical Guidelines, No. 179.) 9, Repositioning).

The current International pressure ulcer guidelines, including European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP), NPIAP and PPPIA recommend the use of the 30° lateral side-lying position.

The stabilising reposition relieves tissue compression and restores blood flow (Moore ZE, Cowman S. Repositioning for treating pressure ulcers. Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 2012 Sep 12;(9):CD006898. doi: 10.1002/14651858.CD006898.pub3. Update in: Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 2015 Jan 05;1:CD006898. doi: 10.1002/14651858.CD006898.pub4. PMID: 22972101).
