Algeos celebrates its 125th anniversary

2006 is a special year for Algeos as the company celebrates 125 years in business. Algeos originally started out as a Leather Merchants way back 1881. Since then the company has changed owners 6 times, moved premises on 4 occasions, witnessed 2 World Wars (narrowly surviving the 1941 Liverpool blitz) and battled through 6 economic recessions!

125 years in business is an amazing achievement for any organisation and is something Algeos staff past and present can be very proud of.

In the 19th century, the average lifetime for a company was 100-150 years. Today in 2006, the average lifetime of a company (globally) is just 7 years! The time it takes for the top 500 companies of the world to go from establishment to dissolution or transfer to another group is about 40-50 years. Statistics also reveal that only 34 out of every 1000 companies established in the UK survive until they are managed by the third generation.

Continuous growth

The fact that Algeos continues to grow year on year, has plans to enter new markets and bring in new innovative products to maintain this growth, illustrates the magnitude of this achievement, as well as the company's dynamism and strength.

Over the years, especially under Alan Sheridan's stewardship, Algeos has grown tremendously to become the UK's leading supplier of Orthopaedic & Podiatric materials, machinery and components. The company also serves other specialist medical professions including Prosthetics, Orthotics, Diabetic footcare and Physiotherapy.

Algeos today stock 6000 products and employ over 40 staff in at our headquarters in Liverpool, England.

The future

Every anniversary brings with it fond memories of past successes (and failures), but an anniversary also heralds a new starting point for the future. And at Algeos the future looks bright!

Our targets for the next 10 years include:

  • To be among the top rehabilitation supplies companies in Europe.
  • To work with our customers, suppliers and other stakeholders to develop and improve the industries we are collectively a part of.
  • To grow the business year on year while still remaining profitable.
  • To further grow the business's interests through acquisition and new market entry.
  • To enhance the working lives of our staff through continuous training and personal development.

We're confident we can achieve these targets by continuing to be reactive to the needs of our customers and working closely with our stakeholders both internally and externally. So hopefully 125 years from now, a future Algeos employee will be writing something similar to this piece celebrating 250 years in business!
