Choosing your autoclave:
N Type (Non-vacuum): Only suitable for unwrapped, solid instruments
B Type (Vacuum): Suitable for unwrapped and wrapped instruments, which are solid or lumened.

  • It is recommended that autoclaves reach a temperature of 134-137 degrees for a minimum of 3 minutes.
  • A printer or USB capability is recommended for validity and traceability. The Society of Chiropodists & Podiatrists (SCP) states: “It is not a legal requirement to have a printer or data logger attached to the autoclave: however, it is advisable as this can assist with the tracking of instruments and fulfil your daily testing requirements. For this, the Society recommends that all members, when purchasing a new autoclave, select a model that has a data logger or printer attached.”
  • Distilled water should be used in the reservoir and changed regularly (at least daily) to ensure effective sterilisation is achieved and scale and rust accumulation on the instruments is prevented.
  • Perforated trays ensure that steam can reach the surface of all instruments.
  • Don’t overfill the autoclave as this will prevent optimum levels of sterilisation occurring.
  • Instruments such as nippers, forceps, and scissors should be placed in an open position to ensure sterilisation of the blade surface.
  • Routine testing of the autoclave’s performance is required to ensure that correct sterilising conditions are consistently being achieved. A daily, weekly, quarterly and yearly testing schedule is required. These tests include the Helix Test, Bowie Dick Test, and Prion Test.

Servicing your new autoclave:
The service and maintenance of your new autoclave can be carried out a number of ways:

  • Directly with the manufacturer
  • By a qualified engineer
  • The Algeos Service Department.

Please contact us if you wish to discuss which option best suits your requirements.
