Global partnership creates the ultimate foot orthotic for Diabetics
Back to: Website Index >> Algeos News

Dated June 2007

Algeos (UK) have been working with the World’s most respected preform foot orthotic producers Interpod Pty Ltd (Australia), to create the ultimate foot orthotic for diabetes sufferers: the Interpod Diabetic. This is the World’s first preform foot orthotic for diabetics that boasts both functionality and cradling that can rival that of a custom made device.

There are over 2 million diabetes sufferers in the UK, and up 750,000 people with diabetes who have the condition who do not even know it yet, according to Diabetes UK. Diabetes is on the rise. The Telegraph states that there were over 100,000 new cases in the UK in the past year alone. The condition brings with it long term health complications that can effect your eyes, heart, kidneys, nerves and feet. Diabetic foot problems are one of the most common causes of admission to hospital for diabetes sufferers, and a diabetic is 15 times more likely to have a foot amputation than a non-diabetic.

Although these figures may seem shocking, there is a great deal of research and technological development in this field. Modern materials and design provide the clinician with new and innovative methods of treatment and prevention for diabetic foot complaints.

Algeos have always been at the forefront when it comes to supplying and supporting the professional with pioneering new products that can vastly improve the level and quality of modern diabetic foot care. Now, they have teamed up with research-backed innovators of preform orthotic technology Interpod to come up with the most exciting new diabetic orthotic on the market.

There are numerous diabetic orthotics on the market that provide a ‘cradling’ effect for the foot, but very few that use biomechanical principles to off-load the forefoot, as does the Interpod Diabetic.

Research has proved that by controlling the rear foot, you can relieve pressure on the forefoot and improve biomechanical function. A moderate 6° arch height and profile design of the Interpod Diabetic aids both control and comfort, and therefore patient compliance, but still provides adequate off-loading.

In addition to this, the Interpod Diabetic also incorporates a PORON 96 top cover. PORON 96 is a slow memory, medical grade cushioning polyurethane foam memory that cradles the foot and allows enhanced redistribution of body weight over the foot’s plantar surface.

By combining these two design features Algeos, the primary vendor of this product are confident they have the ultimate solution for preventing diabetic foot breakdown. Rob Bradbury of Algeos says: “This new, technologically advanced insole will, without a doubt, have a massive impact on the treatment and prevention of diabetic foot conditions. With support and positive feedback from some of the UK’s top podiatrists and diabetes specialists, the Interpod Diabetic is the next big thing in diabetic foot care”.
